Bogan Technical High School (9-12)
Introduction
I had the opportunity to student teach at Bogan High School for 8 weeks (Jan-March), leading 4 class periods of IB/MYP Multimedia Art. Each class period was a wide range and mix of 9th-12th grade students. My cooperating teacher was Ms. Bianca Santoyo.
88% Low income students, 21% Students with IEPs, 12% ELL (Illinois Report Card, 2020-2021).
My approach to instruction accounted for the students' attitudes and opinions towards not only visual arts, but towards their education in general. It was important to create a unit that allowed students to practice their technical and practice skills, as well as trusting the process and practicing self-discipline in independently working as an artist/student. This was a unit built for students to succeed and develop as conscious creators.

Curriculum Grid
Foundations
Students began with foundational information by learning vocabulary and concepts in basic color theory. It is beneficial and engaging to use visual examples that are socially and/or culturally relevant to the students during instruction.
Here, you can find the Powerpoint slides and a guiding vocabulary worksheet that I created and utilized for my students. A following activity to measure their understanding can be a quiz, worksheet, or Kahoot.
Practice Activity
Once acquiring the foundations, students transitioned into a painting activity, allowing them to exercise their practical skills in mixing colors with acrylic paint.
Students practiced painting and mixing tints, shades, and hues of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
Final Art Project
The final art project was painting a celebrity portrait using a monochromatic color scheme (using 5 values) with a complementary color background. Essentially, students were tracing from a printed reference and coloring/painting by number.
This section, you can view the rubric (made to be student-friendly and in alignment with Bogan's grading policies and expectations), process examples, and student work examples.
